STORY mfg. Takes Inspiration From Mythical Islands for “Is. Lunar” Collection

Having channeled the British trend for "eco-holidays" with its Spring/Summer 2018 "EARTHSHINE" collection, London-based label STORY mfg. has looked further afield for its next release. Taking inspiration from the mythical Lunar Island -- described as "the furthest flung Arab island located just off the western coast of France" -- the "Is. Lunar" collection for Fall/Winter 2018 sees the brand continue to develop its natural dyes and innovative plant based fabrics.

Some of the highlights include pieces in a golden-yellow color made from jackfruit waste, as well as silk-like pieces that are produced from a lotus flower yarn. Elsewhere, "Is. Lunar" sees STORY mfg. work with some of the colors, materials and techniques that have featured in previous collections. This includes the use of indigo and iron to create blue and black colors respectively, as well as block printed fabrics, embroidery, casual flared suits and wide-leg fits all featuring throughout.

Take a look at the lookbook for "Is. Lunar" above. While the collection won't arrive in stores until July 2018, it will be available for pre-order via a sign up on the STORY mfg. web store from January 20. visvim Spotlights Albumen Coated Hemp Cloth in Latest Dissertation

In his constant exploration into fabrics and processes, Hiroki Nakamura of visvim publishes his latest dissertation on albumen coating. Developed by the Miao people of Guizhou, China, the technique has been passed on from many generations, and is historically applied to traditional costumes. The process starts by saturating indigo-dyed linen and cotton in egg whites, upon drying, the fabric gains water-resistant properties and rigidity. The fabric is then buffed using a stone wrapped in leather for a natural shine.

After the process, the fabric is usually made into garments and further detailed with a single-needle embroidery technique. In the spotlight for this dissertation are two pieces offered from visvim which use this technique: The 0118105013003 YUKATA COAT (N.D.) and the 0118105013013 GREASE MONKEY COAT US (N.D.)

For those interested in more of Hiroki Nakamura's study on fabrics and applications, don't forget to check out previous visvim dissertations.

Brothers Build Flying Bathtub in Order to Buy Sandwich

Two German brothers, Philipp and Johannes Mickenbecker (also known as The Real Life Guys) have finally taken their flying bathtub drone out into the wild. Crossing farm land and a small pond, the 120-horsepower bathtub drone carried one of the bothers into town on his quest to buy a sandwich. Leaving bystanders bewildered as they looked on at the flying bathtub, the flight and project was fully backed by the German government, and at one point the cashier asks if the flight was a success.

Although somewhat silly in nature, the fact that this bathtub was able to carry a grown man such a distance is another step forward for drone and propeller technology. Maybe this is not the best time for GoPro to be quitting the drone market after all.

Milan Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2018 Attendees Mixed Neutrals and Bold Hues For Day 2

Following a vibrant parade of textures and patterns from day 1, the second day of Milan Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2018 street style solidified previously observed trends -- check prints, corduroy and furry coats -- with a balanced approach that fused heritage wear with vibrant streetwear classics.

The main element at play was color. Traditional outerwear garments such as trench coats, shearling jackets and Glen plaids anchored ensembles with a wash of beiges and browns, while military-inspired puffers and bombers (e.g. the olive Craig Green piece) came in signature olive and black variations. These neutral color palettes were broken up with hits of bold primary colors via streetwear staples such as appliquéd hoodies, track pants, anoraks and statement-making accessories such as the Supreme x Louis Vuitton bag and the orange striped Off-White™ scarf.

Graphic prints and logomania toned down significantly from previous seasons, appearing more as accents than focal points (for example the Prada detailing), whereas waist packs and clunky sneakers (e.g. Raf Simons's Ozweegos and Nike Air Monarch) continued to dominate the accessories and footwear category. One new trend to keep an eye out for is shearling-lined coats, especially ones that lean more traditional in style.
